Govt to review R+D financing system

The government will review financing for research and development this year to improve the efficiency of the support system and help the country reach its goal of boosting R+D spending from 1.15pc of GDP to 1.8pc by 2020, National Economy Ministry state secretary Zoltan Csefalvay told MTI on the sidelines of a conference on Tuesday.

The government is still discussing Hungary's national programme for EU2020, but the 1.8pc-of-GDP goal is a realistic one, and corresponds to Hungary's capacities and traditions, Mr Csefalvay said.

The government restructured the institutional system for R+D with the establishment of the National Innovation Office last year, he said. This year the task will be to examine the financing system with a view to contributions and additional resources such as venture capital, public procurements and tax breaks, he added.

Mr Csefalvay was speaking at a conference of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.
